The Library hosted a gathering with the poet Michael Longley, one of the patrons of the Library Development Appeal.
Michael Longley was invited to deliver the acceptance speech he gave to the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome when he received the Feltrinelli International Prize.
This prize is awarded once in every five years in each of the fields of the arts, music, literature, history, philosophy, medicine and physical and mathematical sciences.
Longley has received numerous literary awards, as well as recognition from both the academic and civic society in Britain and throughout the island of Ireland.
The Library exists for everyone, but relies on the dedication and generosity of a few. Today’s event is a wonderful reminder of the important cultural space we occupy – a chance to recognise and celebrate the contribution of one of our patrons, and to demonstrate our continuing mission.
Mr Brian Acheson, Chairperson of the Library’s Development Appeal
It was a great honour to have Michael Longley, distinguished and internationally recognised poet, and one of the Patrons of our Library Endowment Project, with us in Armagh for this unique occasion.
We very much appreciate Michael’s support and encouragement with the Endowment Project which provides financial support for the protection and conservation of our historic collection.
Until 31 August 2023, the National Lottery Heritage Fund is matching every donation, including gift aid, £1 for £.1. We hope this will encourage more donations to ensure that the books and artefacts may continue to be available and enjoyed for generations to come.
Keeper of the Library, the Very Revd Shane Forster
