This year, there are two guided tours of some of the city’s oldest establishments to choose from and better still, both are free of charge!
At 2.30pm, you are invited to an ‘Afternoon on the Hill’. This is a threefold, hour long visit to Armagh’s ancient hill. A guided tour will be given of St. Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral, Armagh Public Library and the former Registry at No 5 Vicars’ Hill. All have beautiful and fascinating interiors with collections that will interest every age group. The Cathedral building dates from 1268, while the Library and No 5 date back to the early 1770s and all three buildings are within a few metres of each other. The new tea shop at 4 Vicars’ Hill will be open on St Patrick’s Day from 10am to 4pm and is the perfect place to relax either before or after the tour. Everyone is welcome and no booking is necessary. Please meet at 2.30pm at the main door of the Cathedral.
Alternatively, you are invited to spend an hour at the Armagh Observatory on the ‘Bringing Heaven down to Earth’ tour and meet the astronomers during a guided tour of the Observatory’s Orrery and Astropark. The Observatory dates back to 1789 and this tour mixes old with new. The attractive landscaped gardens will interest all age groups.
Again, all are welcome and no booking is necessary. Please meet at 2.30pm at the car park in front of the Observatory.
