This talk begins with an exploration of the story of emigration from Ulster to America in the years leading up to the American War of Independence before going on to consider the contribution of those born in the province to the American Revolution, whether as soldiers, politicians, printers, philosophers and financiers, among many other roles.
A lecture in a series of six, Armagh and USA 250, exploring intellectual and historical links between Armagh and early America, highlighting thinkers such as Francis Hutcheson, David Hume, John Locke and Thomas Paine.

Speaker | William Roulston
Dr William Roulston has been Research Director of the Ulster Historical Foundation since 2006.
Among his other books, he is the author of Researching Scots-Irish Ancestors, 1600–1800 (2nd edition, 2018), the co-author of Exiles of ’98: Ulster Presbyterians and the UnitedStates (2018), and the co-editor of Transatlantic Lives: The Irish Experience in Colonial America (2019). He has undertaken a number of lecture tours in the United States.
