European Heritage Open Days

European Heritage Open Days is an annual event celebrating local architecture, history and culture. Each year over 250 people open their doors and organise events for EHOD across Northern Ireland, including the three buildings on the Hill of Armagh.

Armagh Robinson Library and No 5 Vicars’ Hill will be open:

• Saturday 14 September 2024, 11.00am to 5.00pm
• Sunday 15 September 2024, 2.00pm to 5.00pm

The 2024 theme is Routes, Connections and Networks – Links in our Heritage. Our heritage, in both its tangible and intangible forms, is a reminder of how peoples, communities, countries and cultures have long been inter-connected. It is also a reminder of how we continue to be connected, through common values, shared practices and a desire to protect and make sense of our individual and collective histories. So much of our heritage illustrates the physical routes that once connected us, the mobilities of the past and how people, objects, ideas and beliefs travelled far and wide.

In the Library the 1770 original drawings of the Library building by the architect Thomas Cooley will be on display.

We will also have on display examples of embroidery from Ukraine with explanation of the use of colours and designs, to link with the theme of connection. This will continue our links with the Ukrainian families in County Armagh.

At No 5, we will show both the building and the garden. One of our volunteers, Anna, has been working on adding plants which make a difference in safeguarding the planet, as well as adding plants which were valued in 18th century gardens, again making connections to the past and the future.
