SUMMARY:Lecture | Jonathan Swift: Gulliver Amongst Friends
DESCRIPTION:The Library will host the lecture Gulliver Amongst Friends\, given by Hester Grant\, on Wednesday 21 October 2026 at 7.30pm. \n\n\n\nThe lecture will be one of the many to be given this autumn to highlight the 300th anniversary of the publication of Jonathan Swift’s work Gulliver’s Travels. \n\n\n\nAdmission is free with advanced booking required via e-mail admin@armaghrobinsonlibrary.co.uk or phone 028 37523142. \n\n\n\nIn March 1726 Jonathan Swift travelled from Dublin to London with the manuscript of Gulliver’s Travels in his baggage. He spent the summer with his close friends Alexander Pope and John Gay\, at Pope’s villa on the Thames at Twickenham\, wandering through Pope’s beautiful garden and grotto\, boating downriver to visit newly built Marble Hill\, and plotting the clandestine publication of Gulliver’s Travels. \n\n\n\nHester said about her lecture\, \n\n\n\n\nI will explain how the intensity of the reunion of the three writers\, and stimulation provided by the long-absent Swift\, marked a turning point in the careers of Pope and Gay\, while Gulliver’s Travels received its final amendments. Threaded through this narrative is an account of the writing of Swift’s masterpiece\, and the story of its secret publication (necessary on account of its explosive satire) that involved dropping the manuscript at a publisher’s ‘in the dark from a Hackney-coach’. \n\n\n\n\nCopies of Hester’s publication The Twitnam Summer will be available to buy following the lecture at £25.00. \n\n\n\n\n\nKeeper of Armagh Robinson Library\, the Very Revd Shane Forster\, on Hester’s lecture\, \n\n\n\n\nThe first edition of Gulliver’s Travels\, with Jonathan Swift’s hand-written annotated notes\, is definitely one of the most famous items in our collection at Armagh Robinson Library. In this significant year for the book\, we are delighted that Hester Grant will be delivering this lecture for us\, opening the door to the relationships\, context and events around the eighteenth-century publication of this very significant piece of literature. \n\n\n\n\nHester Grant is a writer specialising in the eighteenth century. Her first book The Good Sharps\, a biography of a remarkable eighteenth-century family\, was published by Chatto & Windus in 2020. Hester’s second book\, The Twitnam Summer\, published by Harper Collins\, was launched earlier this year to coincide with Gulliver’s Travels special anniversary.

SUMMARY:Lecture | Swift and the Vexed Publication of Gulliver’s Travels\, 1726-1735
DESCRIPTION:The lecture Swift and the Vexed Publication of Gulliver’s Travels\, 1726-1735\, will be given on Wednesday 28 October 2026\, by Professor Ian Campbell Ross\, Professor Emeritus Trinity College Dublin. The lecture is part of the series to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the first publication of Gulliver’s Travels. \n\n\n\nBooking\n\n\n\nAdmission is free\, but booking is essential by e-mailing: admin@armaghrobinsonlibrary.co.uk . \n\n\n\nSupported by Queen’s University Belfast. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIan Campbell Ross\, Emeritus Professor of Eighteenth-Century Studies and Fellow Emeritus in Trinity College Dublin\, has published widely on writers including Laurence Sterne\, Tobias Smollett\, Elizabeth Sheridan\, Oliver Goldsmith and Jonathan Swift. With Stephanie Breen and Aileen Douglas\, he has co-curated the ‘Gulliver at 300’ exhibition in the Long Room\, The Library\, Trinity College Dublin\, which will run until 31 December 2026. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaking ahead of his lecture in Armagh\, Ian said\, \n\n\n\n\nGulliver’s Travels is among the most famous\, widely-read books in world literature and one that has certainly succeeded\, as Swift intended\, in vexing many of its readers over three centuries. The work now exists in thousands of versions\, from scholarly editions to popular printings\, abridgements\, illustrated editions and translations into many languages\, to children’s books\, comics and film adaptations. The Gulliver’s Travels familiar to today’s readers accordingly varies greatly. It is an irony that the first reader of the Travels to be vexed by the book was none other than Swift himself. This lecture will look at the author’s labyrinthine stratagems to avoid being identified as the author of his dangerously satirical work on first publication in 1726\, and his subsequent efforts over the next decade to see his book in print in a version he could approve. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nIan added the quotation from Jonathan Swift to Alexander Pope written on 29 September 2025\, ‘the chief end I propose to myself in all my labours is to vex the world rather than divert it.’ \n\n\n\nCarol Conlin\, Assistant Keeper of Armagh Robinson Library said\, \n\n\n\n\nThe lecture series is being organised in association with the Centre for Eighteenth-Century Studies at Queen’s University Belfast. We are most grateful for this support and wish to thank in particular Professor Moyra Haslett\, the Coordinator for the Library’s Memorandum of Understanding with Queen’s University Belfast. We also look forward to the second lecture in the series\, which will be given by Professor Haslett on Thursday 12 November 2026.

SUMMARY:Annual Rokeby Lecture | Gulliver's Travels Now
DESCRIPTION:The annual Rokeby lecture is the last lecture in the series to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the first publication of Gulliver’s Travels. \n\n\n\nOn Thursday 26 November 2026\, Brean Hammond: Emeritus Professor of Modern English Literature\, University of Nottingham\, will ask: what is the continuing significance of Gulliver’s Travels and indeed of literary satire\, now? \n\n\n\nBooking\n\n\n\nAdmission is free\, but booking is essential by e-mailing: admin@armaghrobinsonlibrary.co.uk . \n\n\n\nSupported by Queen’s University Belfast. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJonathan Swift’s Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World\, better known as Gulliver’s Travels\, was published in London by Benjamin Motte on 28 October 1726. This edition was a bitter disappointment to Swift both for its carelessness and because it contained altered and omitted passages. An early witness to Swift’s unhappiness is the large-paper copy on permanent display in the Long Room in the Armagh Robinson Library that is believed to have been annotated by Swift himself. \n\n\n\nIn 1735\, Dublin publisher George Faulkner brought out a new version as part of a complete edition of Swift’s writings that promised to set the text to rights. \n\n\n\nWhere\, then\, is there a more appropriate venue for a lecture on Gulliver’s Travels? But why lecture on it at all? Why\, 300 years later\, are we still reading it? What might it have to say to the reader who picks it up for the first time in 2026? In this year’s Rokeby Lecture\, Brean Hammond asks what is the continuing significance of Gulliver’s Travels and indeed of literary satire\, now? \n\n\n\n\n\nBrean Hammond\n\n\n\nBrean Hammond is Emeritus Professor of Modern English Literature at the University of Nottingham. Amongst his most significant book publications are Professional Imaginative Writing in England 1670-1740 (Oxford University Clarendon Press\, 1997)\, Double Falsehood (The Arden Shakespeare\, 2010)\, Jonathan Swift (Irish Academic Press\, 2010) and Tragicomedy (Methuen\, 2021). \n\n\n\nHe has written many articles on Jonathan Swift including\, most recently\, contributions to The Cambridge Companion to Gulliver’s Travels (CUP\, 2024) and Jonathan Swift in Context (CUP\, 2024). \n\n\n\nHe also writes prose fiction and theatre pieces. His music-theatre play Master Byrd has been widely performed in England and overseas. In 2026 it can be seen at the Stour Festival and at the Guernsey Music Festival with music provided by the acclaimed ensemble Stile Antico.
