SUMMARY:Playful Museums Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Library is delighted to take part in the Playful Museums Festival 2026 with two sessions\, Willow the Warbler’s Journey\, for pre-school children and their carers. The Festival is made possible by grants and support from the Northern Ireland Museums Council (NIMC). \n\n\n\nThe sessions will take place from 10.30am to 11.30am on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 February 2026. \n\n\n\nBoth sessions will be offered free of charge and are open to families with children under 5 years old. \n\n\n\n Booking is essential by telephoning 028 37523142 or e-mailing admin@armaghrobinsonlibrary.co.uk \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe sessions will be run by facilitator Ursula Monaghan: \n\n\n\n\nWe will look at the journey of a willow warbler\, a bird which travels from Africa in spring to spend the summer here. The story will include physical movements and singing with the children. We will have colouring-in activities and a little booklet for the children to take home\, so that carers and children can continue to explore the importance of caring for small birds and the vital role they play in our environment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Library’s Assistant Keeper\, Carol Conlin\, said\,  \n\n\n\n\nWe are very pleased to participate in the Playful Museums Festival for another year. We have been successful in gaining grants and publicity with the previous festivals but do not take such support for granted. It is a marvellous boost for us as we are a small independent museum which is keen to encourage families with young children to visit us. It will be a pleasure to have Ursula back with us to facilitate the sessions.  \n\n\n\nWe hope that we may welcome local families\, and staff members and families of ArKe Sure Start who have encouraged us to be a ‘playful museum’.

SUMMARY:World Book Day | Stuart Neville
DESCRIPTION:The City Chapter is twenty-five years old this year and keen to celebrate in several ways. The first event is a celebration of World Book Day 2026 with a reading by the author Stuart Neville on Thursday 5 March 2026 at 7.30pm in Armagh Robinson Library.Stuart supported the City Chapter on two previous occasions: once in 2009 when he gave a reading prior to the publication of his debut novel ‘The Twelve’. It is also known as ‘The Ghosts of Belfast’ which won the Mystery/Thriller category of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. It was also picked as one of the top crime novels of 2009 by both the New York Times and the LA Times. He gave a second reading on crime fiction in 2013 in the former Armagh Gaol building. \n\n\n\n\n\nShortlisted for various awards\, including the MWA Edgar\, CWA Dagger\, Theakstons Old Peculier Novel of the Year\, Barry\, Macavity\, Dilys awards\, as well as the Irish Book Awards Crime Novel of the Year\, Stuart has since published twelve more critically acclaimed books\, two of which were under the pen name Haylen Beck\, as well as a short story collection. \n\n\n\nSpeaking ahead of World Book Day\, Stuart said\,  \n\n\n\n\nIt’s always a pleasure to do an event for the City Chapter. Libraries have played an important role throughout my life\, from borrowing my first books as a child to providing a quiet place to work as an adult. I support libraries because they support me\, and I would never have become a writer without them. \n\n\n\n\nThe City Chapter\, which is the partnership of Armagh City Library\, Armagh Robinson Library\, the Cardinal O Fiaich Library and Archive and the Cultural Heritage Service Library\, is delighted to welcome Stuart back\, to hear him talk about and read from his work\, to highlight twenty-five years of the collaboration of the Armagh libraries\, and to celebrate the National Year of Reading. Many supported the American Revolution\, which was widely welcomed by Presbyterians and praised by both the United Irishmen and moderates\, despite the constitution allowing slavery. Some migrants helped build democratic institutions\, while others moved westward\, sometimes becoming slave owners or participating in conflicts with Native Americans.  \n\n\n\nThe ideas which propelled the United States to Independence then flowed back across the Atlantic fostering a renewed sense of radicalism in Ulster. \n\n\n\nA lecture in a series of six\, Armagh and USA 250\, exploring intellectual and historical links between Armagh and early America\, highlighting thinkers such as Francis Hutcheson\, David Hume\, John Locke and Thomas Paine. \n\n\n\nOrganised by Armagh Robinson Library\, Armagh County Museum and Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library & Archive. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker | John Gray\n\n\n\nBelfast born John Gray is the former long-standing librarian of the city’s historic Linen Hall Library. He is Chair of Reclaim the Enlightenment\, a charity formed in 2017 to celebrate the town’s progressive era and as a trigger for radical interventions in the present. As a social historian he has been widely published.

One of these influences was the mass migration of Presbyterians\, mainly from Ulster\, to the American colonies in the eighteenth century – and the mindset and belief system they carried with them across the Atlantic. \n\n\n\nThe second factor to be considered is the influence of English Puritanism\, predating the Presbyterian presence in America by about one hundred years. These two sources gave the American patriots their democratic focus and their prioritisation of the rights of the individual\, as embedded in the famous declaration. \n\n\n\nA lecture in a series of six\, Armagh and USA 250\, exploring intellectual and historical links between Armagh and early America\, highlighting thinkers such as Francis Hutcheson\, David Hume\, John Locke and Thomas Paine. \n\n\n\nOrganised by Armagh Robinson Library\, Armagh County Museum and Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library & Archive. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker | Ronnie Hanna\n\n\n\nRonnie Hanna is the author of Land of the Free: Ulster and the American Revolution (1992). He has been a lecturer in the Open Learning programmeat Queen’s University Belfast since 1994\, specializing in British\, American and international history. To mark a previous notable American anniversary in 2020 – 400 years since the sailing of the Mayflower – Ronnie presented the course ‘A City Upon a Hill: The Pilgrim Fathers and America’s English Puritan Legacy’.

William Campbell of Armagh described the pride of Irish Presbyterians when they heard that their relatives composed ‘the flower of Washington’s army … still\, as their fathers had been\, the determined enemies of tyranny and arbitrary power\, which ever pursued them\, and by a strange fatality from the same quarter\, England’.  \n\n\n\nContemporaries experienced the War of American Independence as a civil war\, dividing a proud transatlantic community that regarded itself as Protestant\, maritime\, commercial and uniquely free.  \n\n\n\nThis lecture begins by exploring the influence of the Scots-Irish\, particularly the enlightenment philosopher Francis Hutcheson and his students\, on the American Revolution. It then traces the impact of American independence on Ulster\, focusing on the Presbyterians who formed the backbone of the Irish Volunteers raised in 1778\, and who went on to found the Society of United Irishmen \n\n\n\nA lecture in a series of six\, Armagh and USA 250\, exploring intellectual and historical links between Armagh and early America\, highlighting thinkers such as Francis Hutcheson\, David Hume\, John Locke and Thomas Paine. \n\n\n\nOrganised by Armagh Robinson Library\, Armagh County Museum and Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library & Archive. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker | lan McBride\n\n\n\nIan McBride was born in Keady and educated in Armagh. Since 2016 he has been Foster Professor of Irish History at the University of Oxford.  \n\n\n\nHis books include The Siege of Derry in Ulster Protestant Mythology (1997) and Scripture Politics: Ulster Presbyterians and Irish Radicalism in the Late Eighteenth Century (1998)\, both short-listed for the Christopher Ewart-Biggs Literary Prize; and Eighteenth-Century Ireland: The Isle of Slaves (2009)\, a ‘book of the year’ in History Today and the Spectator. He recently finished a book entitled The Origins of the Northern Ireland Peace Process\, which will be published by the Royal Irish Academy in November this year. He is currently writing a book on Irish Catholics under the Penal Laws\, based largely on archival sources in Rome.
