The visit of Admiral Henry Randal MacDonnell\n\n\n\nLecture on Admiral Enrique MacDonnell\, descendant of the Earls of Antrim\, who was stationed in Havana in the late 18th century when European powers were watching with interest the emergence of the newly independent United States. \n\n\n\nTo gain a better understanding of this post-colonial society\, MacDonnell spent upwards of a year there recording his thoughts on the military\, political\, economic and internal affairs of this new player on the trans-Atlantic stage. \n\n\n\nA lecture in a series of six\, Armagh and USA 250\, exploring intellectual and historical links between Armagh and early America\, highlighting thinkers such as Francis Hutcheson\, David Hume\, John Locke and Thomas Paine. \n\n\n\nOrganised by Armagh Robinson Library\, Armagh County Museum and Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library & Archive. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker | Roddy Hegarty\n\n\n\nRoddy Hegarty has previously been Development Officer and later\, Chair of the Federation for Ulster Local Studies and was a ministerial appointee to the Northern Ireland Museums Council for several years.  \n\n\n\nCurrently a trustee of the Ulster Local History Trust\, and regular speaker on topics of local history\, he is the Director of the Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library & Archive.

William Campbell of Armagh described the pride of Irish Presbyterians when they heard that their relatives composed ‘the flower of Washington’s army … still\, as their fathers had been\, the determined enemies of tyranny and arbitrary power\, which ever pursued them\, and by a strange fatality from the same quarter\, England’.  \n\n\n\nContemporaries experienced the War of American Independence as a civil war\, dividing a proud transatlantic community that regarded itself as Protestant\, maritime\, commercial and uniquely free.  \n\n\n\nThis lecture begins by exploring the influence of the Scots-Irish\, particularly the enlightenment philosopher Francis Hutcheson and his students\, on the American Revolution. It then traces the impact of American independence on Ulster\, focusing on the Presbyterians who formed the backbone of the Irish Volunteers raised in 1778\, and who went on to found the Society of United Irishmen \n\n\n\nA lecture in a series of six\, Armagh and USA 250\, exploring intellectual and historical links between Armagh and early America\, highlighting thinkers such as Francis Hutcheson\, David Hume\, John Locke and Thomas Paine. \n\n\n\nOrganised by Armagh Robinson Library\, Armagh County Museum and Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library & Archive. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker | lan McBride\n\n\n\nIan McBride was born in Keady and educated in Armagh. Since 2016 he has been Foster Professor of Irish History at the University of Oxford.  \n\n\n\nHis books include The Siege of Derry in Ulster Protestant Mythology (1997) and Scripture Politics: Ulster Presbyterians and Irish Radicalism in the Late Eighteenth Century (1998)\, both short-listed for the Christopher Ewart-Biggs Literary Prize; and Eighteenth-Century Ireland: The Isle of Slaves (2009)\, a ‘book of the year’ in History Today and the Spectator. He recently finished a book entitled The Origins of the Northern Ireland Peace Process\, which will be published by the Royal Irish Academy in November this year. He is currently writing a book on Irish Catholics under the Penal Laws\, based largely on archival sources in Rome.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World : Gulliver's Travels at 300
DESCRIPTION:2026 marks the 300th anniversary of the first edition of Travels Into Several Remote Nations of the World. This work\, written by Jonathan Swift\, is commonly known as Gulliver’s Travels. \n\n\n\nThe first edition of Gulliver’s Travels was published on 28 October 1726. It sold out within a week\, and within two months a second and third edition were printed. The work was the talk of the town. \n\n\n\nThe Library is very proud to own Jonathan Swift’s own large paper copy of that first edition. This copy contains annotations by Swift’s own hand. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition explores Gulliver’s Travels as a commentary on 18th century society\, politics\, science\, education\, and human nature. \n\n\n\nIt also takes into consideration the pitfalls of the publishing process at the time\, and the consequences of Swift’s methods.

SUMMARY:European Heritage Open Days 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Library and No 5 will open for European Heritage Open Days 2026 on Saturday 12 September\, and the Library on Sunday 13 September. \n\n\n\nSaturday 12 September \n\n\n\n\nArmagh Robinson Library – 11.00am to 5.00pm\n\n\n\nNo 5 Vicars’ Hill – 11.00am to 5.00pm\n\n\n\nCathedral – 10.00am to 5.00pm\n\n\n\n\nSunday 13 September\n\n\n\n\nArmagh Robinson Library – 2.00pm to 5.00pm\n\n\n\n Due to staff shortages\, we will be unable to open No 5 on Sunday. Our sincerest apologies.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe theme for EHOD this year is ‘Heritage at Risk: Revive\, Resist\, Reimagine’. The buildings open for this annual event will show the traditions and skills applied in their construction. It will also show how the built heritage needs to be protected for the future. More than 500 buildings and venues throughout Northern Ireland will be open for EHOD. In the City of Armagh alone\, 11 buildings will be open\, including churches and museums\, and the Hill of Armagh sits well within those categories. \n\n\n\nThe Library will have on display the 1770 original drawings of the Library building by the architect Thomas Cooley whose work is also known elsewhere in Armagh. Indeed\, the Library’s second building at No 5 Vicars’ Hill is also a Cooley design. From the outside\, No 5 looks like a modest dwelling house\, and visitors are often surprised when they actually enter the building. 18th century craftsmanship is shown off well in both buildings. \n\n\n\n\n\nSt Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral\, Armagh will also be open for EHOD on the Saturday from 10.00am to 5.00pm and will be open for services on Sunday\, but not for EHOD. Visitors may view the architecture and gain that sense of stepping back in time over many centuries on the ancient sacred site that is the Hill of Armagh.The Very Revd Shane Forster\, who is both the Dean of Armagh and Keeper of Armagh Robinson Library and No 5\, said\, “All three buildings on the Hill of Armagh\, which I am a custodian of\, tell the story of how our predecessors lived\, learned and prayed. Yet they are not museums that simply look back to the past but are architectural gems which are still open to the public today\, very much loved and relevant in the current age. DESCRIPTION:Armagh Robinson Library & No 5 Vicars’ Hill will be open for the Georgian Festival on Saturday 28th November and Sunday 29th November 2026. \n\n\n\n\nSat 28 November from 12pm to 5pm\n\n\n\nSun 29 November from 2pm to 5pm\n\n\n\n\nAll events are drop in – no booking required – free of charge\, donations welcome. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nLibrary staff and volunteers will be to answer any questions about the Library’s treasures. Both the Library and No 5 Vicars’ Hill will also have Georgian Living History Interpreters present. \n\n\n\nIn the Library\, we will have a caricaturist in the Library on the Saturday afternoon\, and a silhouette cutter on the Sunday afternoon.   \n\n\n\nIn No 5 Vicars’ Hill\, we will have a wax sealing activity on Saturday\, highlighting its early use as a registry.
